review 1: Really enjoyable read - loved the heroine and her self possession, book made me laugh and the story was interesting and original. Some of the Regency details I felt were off - the daughter of a Duke is not going to be 'ruined' by being caught alone with a man. Sorry, but her dowry would just be too tempting. And also, why is she helping her father in his work in the House of Lords? I mean, not that it's impossible, but it is highly unlikely. Will definitely keep a lookout for more of Courtney Milan's work :)
review 2: After a disappointing novella that kicked off the series, Courtney Milan has restored my faith and reminded me of why I like her books so much. She writes so well with so much richness to her descriptions and dialogue that it would have been hard... more to give her up. The heroine is not a cookie cutter heiress trying to find her duke. Rather, when we first meet heroine, Jenny, she’s masquerading Esmeralda, making her living as a fortune teller. She meets the hero, Gareth, when his nephew Ned drags him to meet her. Gareth is a man of science and instantly distrusts Jenny and will stop at nothing to show his nephew that he’s a fraud. He such a man of science that what he doesn’t recognize is the important role she plays in Ned’s well being. As the story begins neither Jenny nor Gareth are in an emotional place where they can give the other what they need. But through the book they help each other become a better person. I really liked the heroine, though I was a bit disappointed with the ending. I would have preferred that we learn more about her origins. One great thing abut the book is that even though there’s angst and emotion, I never felt stuck inside the character’s head as so often happens with angst romance. Really enjoyed this one. less
