review 1: I enjoyed this book very much. The conflict, while slightly convoluted, wasn't a simple one, and wasn't one that could have been solved by sitting everyone in a room and making them talk to each other. The hero is incredibly nice and kind and still very human, and the heroine is smart and strong and still afraid but deals with it. Love the chess thread, felt that was handled very well, as was the brief falling out between Lydia and Minnie.
review 2: I could have easily have starred this book much lower. This is no simple bodice ripper. The story is a bit gloomy throughout. The reader has to wade through some very somber themes to get to a bit of romance. I think the story worth the ride. The characters. their back stories and their interactions are engaging an
... mored they propell the tale to a satisfying conclusion. I love a character driven novel and this was one of them. I am looking forward to reading the subsequent standalone novels. less
