Unincorporated Man
review 1: Very reminiscent of Asimov. The picture painted of this future world and its society and technology is fairly interesting. But the characters are flat and the plot is glacial. The concept is very intriguing and for a short story that would have been enough, but I stopped reading half way through because so far that concept hadn't developed, and nothing interesting was happening to persuade me to hang on to the end to see if it would. Also I found it hard to imagine how this ultra right wing capitalist dystopia was going to be challenged by a protagonist who was himself revealed to be an ultra right wing capitalist just from a slightly different school of capitalism. I feared that the ending might be 'see it was really a utopia and capitalism will work just fine in the fut... moreure'.
review 2: An interesting speculation on the nature of individual freedom and literal investment in each other. This is more of a political thought experiment than political thriller. Some of the big events occur off screen. But the interaction between the two main characters, Justin Cord, the "Unincorporated Man", and his nemesis Hektor Sambianco, champion of self-incorporation, made this book worth the read. It's not often that I wind up torn between the two characters, both of whom have virtues and flaws. I know I'm supposed to be on the side of Cord, since he's the "hero" of the piece, but Sambianco makes a number of very strong points. In the end, I found this to be a stronger book than expected, and much less of a libertarian fantasy than other reviews had led me to believe. I'm not sure I'll continue the series, but I did wind up enjoying this book. less
