review 1: "One Summer" by David Baldacci is most definitely NOT Baldacci's normal fare (nor mine), but I haven't been quite so taken with a story in a very long time. Life happens. The good, the bad, and the ugly. People grieve, grow and learn and ,sometimes, find love again. This is a story of learning to live with loss, to rebuild family in light of that loss, and becoming better and stronger people as a result. I cried many tears; my heart broke and then began to heal. David Baldacci, you have hit a major home run with this story!!
review 2: Jack Armstrong is not supposed to be here, but life has unexpected twists, sometimes miracles in store, and it’s one of those unexpected twists that turns his family’s life upside down. When his children are taken from him, he
... more must bring them back together and rebuild their fractured lives. His wife’s grandmother leaves her family home and a lighthouse on the South Carolina coast to Jack. It is here that Jack and his three children learn to be a family once again. Recommended by Dianna, Four Fathers Memorial Library, Amherst less

This was a very different work for Mr. Baldacci, and an engaging story. The story centers around a miracle that happened to the main character, and the story repeatedly calls it a miracle. However, the entire book, while centered around this miracle, never includes a reference to God. In fact there are scenes where the main character appears to be praying, but he is praying to his dead wife. This studious avoidance of any mention of God, or belief in God struck me as very strange.
