review 1: This is the first book I've read by this author. I have to admit, I got a little worried in the beginning when I realized this would be a book involving the government, military, etc. That type of book is not normally interesting to me. But this book, I have to say, I enjoyed very much. For newbies like me, there was just enough explanation of the different government and military divisions to keep me from feeling totally lost as I moved through the plot. His writing is clear, smooth and flows easily, even with all the information I had to learn along the way. The resolution of the plot is not obvious, and keeps you guessing until the end. I am not usually a big fan of series, but I am definitely considering reading David Baldacci's other book involving this same mai... moren character, John Puller, in "The Forgotten".
review 2: I like the John Puller character. In this novel, John is called to quiet, mining town of Drake, West Virginia to investigate the murder of an army officer and his family. Drake is a town that has been hit hard economically. The jobs are few and the coal mining operation is wrecking havoc on the land and the environment. Underneath the quiet, sleepy, small town surface, trouble is brewing. Trouble that if unleashed, will make the environmental havoc of blast mining look like simple littering in comparison. As Puller investigates the murders with the help of local officer Samantha (Sam, who is facing her own demons), they finally find the truth. The only question is--will it be too late for Drake and for them as well? less

John Puller is an army investigator. When he is assigned to look into the murder of a colonel and his entire family Puller wonders why he is taken out of his normal jurisdiction and why he is given almost no support, but he is a good soldier and does as he is commanded. He finds himself in very rural West Virginia in coal mining country. Forming a solid trust with the local police sergeant they begin to unravel the clues. Treason, terrorism, and nuclear threats abound. While parts of the story seemed a little dry, the story overall was complex and intriguing and got better over the course. I listened to this audiobook.

Good story, kept me reading despite crazy plot machinations and an eerie similarity to the first Jack Reacher book. I thought the emotional aspects of the book, or what could have been emotional aspects, were very underdone. The idea of his father's dementia and his brother's situation really intrigued me but they just weren't explored on an emotional level. At all. And I'm sorry but SPOILER what kind of man is offered no-strings sex and says no? WTH didn't he sleep with Sam? That shit is just unnatural END SPOILER.Fans of purely plot based action novels would enjoy this.
