review 1: This was a great book. The plot revolves around the need for national security. It was hard to discern the good guys from the bad guys--except that Sean King and Michelle Maxwell are th good guys. Edgar Roy--an alleged serial killer held in a secure, facility awaiting trial. He faces certain conviction. King and Maxwell are called in by Roy's attorney, Sean's old friend Ted Bergin, to help work the case. But their investigation runs into problems before it begins--en route to their first meeting, Sean and Michelle find Bergin murdered. It is now up to them to ask the questions no one seems to want answered: Is Roy a killer? Who murdered Bergin? With help from some surprising allies, they continue to pursue the case. But the more they dig into Roy's past, the more they e... morencounter obstacles, half-truths, dead-ends, false friends, and escalating threats from every direction. Their persistence puts them on a collision course with the highest levels of the government and the darkest corners of power.
review 2: Being a fan of the dynamic duo in David Baldacci series of Maxwell and King, I always anticipate excitement, a building climax and a good mystery thriller. Maxwell and King always start out strong, however, the end I am always a little disappointed. I don’t know if it’s always too nicely wrapped up with no loose ends. The chemistry of the two has always been good, however, since they “got together”, this book lacked the chemistry that I always enjoyed. It was blah and it felt more like a father daughter relationship instead of a relationship that was a physical and mutual attraction. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want the relationship to be the focus of the book. I would have rather that no relationship be established if it is not going to be done right. I think the tension is what makes it good reading and when the tension is blah, it is hard to root or even care about it. That is my two cents worth. What I did like about it was the plot. It is amazing our government. It can be frustrating for all but to think about it, all the information our government has to process is something we don’t think about and what made this prose so good. In the realm of terrorism, the 6th man is the analyst that can take all the information, process, fit the pieces together and form a plan of action. Maxwell & King get caught up in the government once again when a lawyer friend of King hires them on a case. A client that is a federal employee Edgar Roy that has been charged with the murder of 6 bodies found buried at his farm house. Upon meeting up with King’s lawyer friend in Maine, they discover him dead on the side of the road with a bullet in his head. Who would want Edgar lawyer dead? The first of many that end up dead and a zombie-like client that is not helpful. As Maxwell and King dig deeper, they discover more questions than answers. Who is paying for Edgar Defense? Who is Edgar? Did Edgar kill the six unidentified buried in his barn? The build up to the prose is excellent. It was so excellent that I had plans with my daughters that I even thought about postponing so I could finish this read. But alas, I did not. less
