Salem's Revenge
review 1: I received a complimentary copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. I have read many witch books over the years but this is not your typical witch tale so let go of all those expectations cause this book is so much more and so much better than anything you could expect or imagine. As I was reading I was trying to think about what I could say to describe it and I decided that this has the survival element of the walking dead but the witches are a much bigger threat then zombies, so okay maybe not the best way to describe it but its so unlike anything else I have come across that it's in a league all it's own and I will therefore stop trying to compare it to something else. I love how the story started at the beginning before all the crazy went down and we got... more to know Rhett a bit and get a feel for his life before everything falls apart and he is thrust into a very different life full of loss and revenge. Rhett grew and changed a lot throughout the book and it was really neat to watch, the tall geeky boy afraid of conflict must suddenly live in a world full of conflict where violence is his only tool for survival and the sweet sensitive kid becomes full of anger and revenge bent on the destruction of all witches, and as he travels through the tattered remains of the country more change comes with the arrival of Laney, the spit fire determined to help him and protect her strange younger sister. What a crazy emotional journey Rhett and the others took me on and I absolutely can not wait to see where things go from here. Rhett and Laney raise many many questions on their journey and only some are answered but not all are believed so I want to know the truth and I want more answers I'm as curious and plauged by questions as the characters themselves. I could not write a review about this book without mentioning the fantasticand adorable Hex, the German Shepard used by witches, saved by Rhett and loved by all, his almost human qualities and his cool helpful tricks made it impossible not to fall for him and I appreciated what her brought to the story and what he brought out in the others. This book was fabulous, the amazing David Estes does it again and I can't wait to get to read the rest of this sure to be wonderful and thoughtful series so pick up this book ASAP and if it's not this one than get one of his other's because each one is better than the next and all worth the time since they are truly wonderful.
review 2: This was my first book by the author and I received it in a read 4 review program. The book is extremely well written, the characters are very well rounded and the world is described with enough details to fire up your imagination without bogging it down. David Estes certainly is a great author. However, I really, really struggled with this book. If I'd give my ratings purely based on whether I liked the story or not, this would have been a one star review. But my rating also takes other points into consideration, like the quality of writing and editing, the believability and whether the story kept me turning pages (which it did albeit a little slowly). The problems I had with this story were these two:I disliked the main character right from the beginning and never grew warm with him. That's a big thing for every novel. If the reader can't relate to the main character it's much harder to like a book. However, the character was very well written, so this is clearly a matter of personal taste. The other thing is that after the training phase the MC went through, there's a longish time jump. Normally, this wouldn't be such a big deal for me, but the author kept re-introducing characters from the time he jumped simply claiming they had changed. I felt cheated because I would have liked to find out if that statement is true for myself. And there were parts in the beginning during the training that could have been tightened enough to make room for the additional scenes. The one thing (well, not really thing but creature) I truly loved: Hex!So, all in all this is a good book. My advice: try the reading sample to see if you'll like the main character. if you do, this will be a great read for you. less
