review 1: David Vann paints a dark and depressing picture of Alaska and people living there. In his 'Caribou Island' we watch (family) history repeating itself with the main characters making the same erroneous choices in relationships throughout there lives. A weak point of the novel is that only a few of the characters really get depth, while most others remain rather shallow. Interesting (old fashioned?) descriptions of relationships, with women following the choices and steps of their men, even though they perfectly seem to realize themselves how unhappy they will be because of this. A strong point is the way in which Vann uses the Alaskan countryside to illustrate the emotions and interactions theoughout the novel.
review 2: This dark story is so honest, so raw, cut
... moreting so close to your bone, that you can't stop reading it, if only to know the painful way it all ends. With beautiful language, evocative use of nature and weather, characters that sear your brain, Caribou Island is as good a novel as I've read in years. Be prepared to be pained and speechless at book's end, but not surprised in the least. Vann is the new man. less

Well that was a depressing read - despite being based in beautiful coastal Alaska...

Suicide + Alaska + cabins. Utterly bleak, but not in a casual or cruel way.
