review 1: The book jacket said "thoroughly barbaric and wickedly funny". I didn't find one kernel of humor here - it might have saved the book. I'd be willing to try another book by this author - some of the writing was beautiful on a descriptive level - but I didn't like, understand or care about any of the characters. The book felt pointless and I struggled to finish it. I didn't throw it across the room, but I felt like it more than once.
review 2: Wow...this book is an ugly, dirty, look at humanity at it's bases form. It made me want to take a shower afterwards. Galen thinks he is on a mission to find the highest level of the mind philosophically and his mother, aunt and cousin are basically crazy. There are so many levels of crazy in this book that it's hard
... moreto even describe. I have tagged it religion because Galen thinks his acts are based on religion and philosophy but he is extremely mentally ill as is the rest of his family. I know many readers have given it a low rating because it is very depraved reading material and many readers simply could not finish it. However, even though it was ugly and extremely disturbing it was written well. Almost too well. It makes me wonder if the author is mentally ill to be able to write this kind of material. It did keep me on the edge of my seat because I have simply not read anything of it's kind. 4 stars but be forewarned it is not for the faint of heart. less
