review 1: David Vann’s Caribou Island is one of my all-time favorites and though this is well-written and gripping it just cannot compare (indeed, nor can most other books). Vann goes quite dark in his books and there is no redemption for his characters. I think what put Caribou Island a notch above for me was the humanity in the characters. In Dirt you really just cannot root for anyone. Galen is the protagonist and he’s trying to find spiritual enlightenment. Let’s just say, at a certain point in the book, when he’s able to achieve a deeply meditative state, with the “right” sounds/environment, it’s harrowing and disturbing. I do think Galen reads more like a young teenage boy than a 22 year old, but perhaps it’s his mental and emotional state. Though I did not lik... moree this as much as Vann’s previous works, he certainly has a unique and haunting voice.
