review 1: I love the characters. I enjoyed the growth of Lady Julia. I tolerated the drawn out relationship dance but I have grown tired of these mysterious on estates. Boring Scottish crumbling estates where there is no momentum to the story beyond wandering the moors talking to the few residents. I was disappointed with this book. Clearly this was to story to propelled Julia and Brisbane's relationship but even that was stunted. 3/4 of the book he avoided interacting with her. This plot line is tiresome and unimaginative. Now I understand the later novellas Raybourn writes because she cannot continue the churn out these boring plot line. I now need to take a break from this author and possibly this genre for a while. It is unfortunate that this was the second boring Scottish ... moreMoor estate mystery that I have read in a row and I did not like.
review 2: Just found this series and what a pleasant surprise... If you can handle a mystery fusion of Laurie King, Jane Austen, Shakespeare, history & a gothic-style romance, this Grey series will offer all that. I was first shied away from this, thinking bodice ripper - Not so my friends, this was a solid story with great character development of a modern woman in the 1800's Europe. Mystery is at the core of this series with great backstories to complete the tales. less
