review 1: This book is a real step up from volume 2 in the series. The multiplicity of secrets and motives, and the wonderfully tangled web they weave together, makes this book intriguing from beginning to end. Lady Julia has compared Nicholas to Heathcliff more than once, and this book plunges straight into Wuthering Heights territory. Add in Roman silver mines, Egyptology, gypsy curses, and an ancient family that has inbred to madness, and then watch Nicholas try to fight his feelings for Julia, who has already acknowledged her feelings for him. Shake well and enjoy.I must admit, however, that there is one thing that has become annoying in this series. Not only does the author have a habit of using pronouns (instead of names) to create a few pages of tension, the narrator (Julia) ... moremakes the mistake over and over and over again of assuming that she knows who the "he" or "she" is that another character is talking about...and of course she's always wrong. Now, Julia is not quite as smart as she thinks she is, but if she keeps on making this same mistake in future books....
review 2: Silent on the Moor was slower paced than the previous books but the setting and the darkness of the plot contributed to that without compromising the quality of the book. Although I still consider book 1 my favorite at least this mystery resolves some issues between Nicholas Brisbane and Lady Julia She accompanies her sister Portia to Yorkshire to rehab a manor Nicholas has been given as reward for solving a crime that involved royalty. Portia leaves Jane her lover and seems out of sorts, brother Val is forced to abandon his medical studies and chaperone the sisters as they travel to a much destroyed home where Nicholas is living. Julia has decided she will force him to say yay or nay to her as she cannot abandon her feelings but cannot move forward while her heart is connected to his. Julia has finally become a card carrying member of the risque Marc family by defying society rules to visit a bachelor and court him. I love her independence but she still is quite the lady- ordering Morag around albeit with affection.Nicholas's secrets - his family, childhood, is intertwined with another family- that of Redwall Allenby- now deceased who appears to have spent all his family's money to explore Egypt and other exotic areas of the world. His survivors- a mother and 2 sisters still live at Grimsgrave Hall and proudly claim pure bloodlines to ancient royalty. Many of the quirky characters from the previous books are only mentioned but a few new ones emerge to keep the plot moving. Raybourn once again has gypsies on the outskirts of the land. Lady Julia befriends Rosalie who has sage advice- don't listen to a persons words- look at their body movements. Words can be false but body language is true. She heeds this advice when Nicholas tells her to go while pulling her hand closer. Gruesome, and strange occurrences and personal conflicts make book 3 a good novel with many subplots, bonus features including sketches, recipes, and letters from the characters included as a plus for those anxious for more of the Silent on the Moor. less
