review 1: 3.75. About half way through the book the interaction with Julia and Brisbane was more than I expected. For the first book post marriage I did not expect their dynamic to change but I wanted a more detailed picture of their domestic life. The pace of the mystery was painfully slow and not such a great mystery. It seemed like the story consisted of Julia walking down the road to talk to people and attending celebrations or funerals. It reminded me of Raybourn other book set in Africa. A Spear of Grass. Ex Pat's in a far off land with nothing to do but entertain one another with how British they can convert an environment and how enthusiastic they are about the food. There was so much death in this book. Too much, it was depressing.
review 2: Solid 3.5 dang ... morenear 4. This story was like an intermezzo of an opera... giving us more time to breathe and learn more about the other vivid characters woven into the lives of Julia & Brisbane. The colonial India backdrop gave the right mystic atmosphere for the couple as they squiggle to define their marriage & re-adjust their working relationship. Many parts were just nerve wracking as Julia was attempted to compete with her hubby at investigating all while demonstrating spoiled brat actions keeping her anchored to her linage. The murder was genius and the murderer a surprise, thus a solid mystery and NOT a romance novel. less
