review 1: #2 in the series expands in the stories created in A Modern Witch. This time we are in Nova Scotia, and it seems that something is broken in the "fetching" spell, when it finds someone they already know. I didn't like this book as much as the first. Elorie, Sophie and Marcus weren't as interesting to me as Lauren, Jamie and Nat. I understand the idea of building a larger set of characters if you are hoping to have a longer series, but I just wasn't as sold on this storyline. I also had issues with the idea of a 'Net witch'. I fully support the idea of the powers This type of witch seems to have, but I questioned the Net component....this seems like it could have been found without technology. After reading this book,I realized the series is reminding me of Jan Karon. ... more Not that there is any connection between witching communities and a Presbyterian minister, but both books have a similar tone: focused on family and community, and the dramas and humors that make up every day life. A quick, light read, good for vacations.
review 2: Entertaining storyline, but once again goes so far into the "internet-coding world" that I lose interest at time. It's a fascinating idea that witches would find a new power developing among them which involved being able to use the internet and computer connections to increase power, but doesn't catch my own personal interest that much. I have to give credit for original thinking, though. I find the story interesting enough to keep me reading, but nothing that I can't put down and forget about for a week. The relationships seem to have a superficial quality that bugs me. Everyone is pretty much wonderful, kind, well-meaning, and understanding-even the crabby people-and that makes it removed enough from reality to prevent me from being able to engage with the characters. The author, while very talented, seems to have missed one of the key tenants of witchcraft that there is no light without dark, and so the stories lack some dimension due to this. It's good to have a feeling that a character is someone you could actually know in real life and relate to. All in all, the series is beginning to wear thin for me, but I will most likely read another book or two to see if it improves. The stories aren't badly developed, but I do wish the characters were a bit more engaging. less
