review 1: Tennessee Governor Gray London and First Lady Mackenzie tried for 10 years to conceive and deliver a full-term baby. Now, their pride and joy, precocious 5 year old Maddie is ready to leave the nest; if only to go to kindergarten. Mackenzie knows that she must let her baby girl grow up, but it will be a bittersweet day. The time may just be right to begin the injections that will bless Gray and Mackenzie with a second baby.Jeremiah, the wise and elderly gardener (First Gardener) has been tending and overseeing the grounds for 25 years and he has seen governors come and go. While he liked each family, he has a special place in his heart for the Londons and especially for Maddie who has brought such joy and innocence to the mansion. Tragedy strikes the Londons in waves ... moreand it tears at Jeremiah's heart. The only way he can communicate his feelings and his wishes for the family is through the flowers he sends into the house, each flower bearing a special message along with its meaning. He hopes to ease the pain and to offer up some encouragement to have faith, but the flowers, and especially the messages are banned from the house. It seems the only thing Jeremiah can do is pray.Had it not been for the character of Jeremiah, I may have given up on this book. The sadness and the troubles just kept coming and for a while, it was an extremely depressing read. I became reluctant to go on to a new chapter for fear of what was coming next. (That's the way the poor characters themselves felt too!)An attempt at humor was made through the characters of Mackenzie's rather crusty Southern born and bred mama and her wacky friends, but the humor felt forced and totally out of character for the plot of this particular book. I found them and their behavior to be embarrassing and tasteless, even for quirky 70+ year old ladies. (The term "ladies" is not the best one to use if you get my idea here.) It was Jeremiah, who is not a main character of the book, who kept me reading. He is heard from every few chapters or so, but through his narration, you can see into his heart and soul. He was the hidden jewel of this book. And, when I say, hidden, I mean hidden. The ending was a total surprise! Glad I trudged through all the sadness after all.
review 2: Grab your tissues before you start reading this book. It is an amazing emotional ride that will take you through joy, pain, grief, grace, and forgiveness. This book is written very well and really captivates you. You immediately fall in love with the characters and I think that is why you almost feel as if you experience their joys and sorrows right along with them as the book continues.I will dare to rank this book up there with "The Help" as one of the best books I've ever read. Amazing. less
