review 1: I will NOT be reading other books by this author. Her only point seems to be that the world is going to hell in a hand basket and people trying to do good are spitting on a fire. Well, thank you very much, I see enough of that every day, I don't need a fictional depiction of the worst of it. No, I'm not looking solely for happy endings, but I do look for what I read to enlighten me or lift me out of the crap, not throw me in the middle of the worst of it because of the author's literary pretensions. I skimmed more than I read of this book, because - after 100 pages - I was still wondering what was supposed to be so great about this disjointed mess. So, yes, things connect in the end, sort of, but by that point, I really didn't care.
review 2: Wow. Yikes. ... more The politics of Glasgow apparently work rather like those in Chicago. I try to ignore my hometown's corruption, but everything in this book was way too close for comfort. Even if the politics weren't familiar, it would all be uncomfortable - like a great thriller has to be. Creepy, eerie, icky, and full of soggy wet Scottish winters. Really good read, interesting and thorough characters who made unexpected decisions. It doesn't have the fast pace of a traditional thriller, but the first half made me so anxious that I couldn't read it before bed (and then I read the second half in a day). Morrow and Leonard might have enough humanity in them to make up for the rest of the characters, not sure. I can't wait to find the rest of the series (too bad I started with the latest one). less
