review 1: This is a really interesting novel, more than the usual mystery. It is never in doubt who is guilty, but the police process of discovery provides for an engaging police procedural, as good mysteries do. Several sub-plots are well developed, relating to family relationships at varied social strata. The story is told in a way that provides insight into perpetrator and victim perspectives. The characters are three dimensional and the writing is very good. I look forward to the next in the series.
review 2: Denise Mina can really write some interesting characters when she wants to. All of the characters here are very three-dimensional, and shades of gray abound. Not really a book for those looking for a whodunnit to solve, but a good read for those who are into the
... more human element and enjoy exploring the way class and upbringing in our modern times weave strong tethers which guide us on our journey whether we want them to or not. less

Good writer. Love the protagonist. Police politics feel very real. Set in the real world.
