review 1: This is my second book by Dima Zales and Anna Zaires and i must say that I am really impressed! The duo did a great job in writing this book and never failed to disappoint. The Thought Readers is a well written book about a guy named Darren with an unusual gift of stopping time around him by phasing into what he calls "the Quiet". One fateful night in the casino, he discovered that he was not the only one who possessed this gift but another mysterious girl who went by the name Mira. With the help of his hacker friend, Albert, Darren tracked her and found himself facing her brother Eugene, instead. Darren found out that he had another special ability and later discovered that there were two types of people like them who had this gift, the Reader, like him who could get ins... moreide someone's thoughts; and the Pusher, who could make someone do what they want. As the story progressed, i was hooked! If you are a fan of sci-fi novels then this is definitely a must-read!
review 2: Actual rating: 2.5In a strange way, this feels like a weird, adult, almost spin off of the Artemis Fowl series. Almost. The Good: interesting concept and fairly exciting last few chapters. I don't think my schadenfreude at the ending counts as a good thing. The Bad:- Darren, the protagonist, is an ultra creep (and douche) who has a habit of thinking with the wrong head. Frequently. *cough*- Suspension of disbelief was basically thrown out the window after chapter 4. I can handle only so many convenient situations.- The contradictory morals are confusing. If Darren has no qualms being a voyeur and sneaking into girls' locker rooms, why does he have issues touching females during "The Quiet"?- Hypocrisy is rampant when comparing the actions of the Pushers vs the Readers. Privacy and free will are both important, yo. The Questionable: there are attempts to make some of the side characters diverse, but they end up being the stereotypes they try to subvert; the plot is predictable. On a last, minor note: I am mystified by Zales' decision concerning the hacking of a casino database, especially Zale formerly worked as a programmer. Probably because Bert seemed so insignificant he was essentially a human prop that the situation just seemed too convenient for Darren. less
