review 1: It's been a while since I've read a suspenseful murder mystery. This was great -- very dark and twisty. I was glued to this all day; hard to put down. The story revolves around several story lines that bring together Sandra, a forensic photographer whose husband was murdered; Marcus, a man who has amnesia but is clearly some sort of detective, and a secret (of course) group of priests who are guarding decades of confessions of criminals, and a group of secondary characters who are either killers or victims. The story jumps around a lot which didn't bother me but it was challenging to keep track of all the stories. I found Sandra the least interesting character; occasionally, she said or did things that induced eye-rolling, but her pursuit of her husband's murderers is c... moreentral to the story and she fulfills a key role. Rome was a great setting. I was surprised many times throughout this book. Very suspenseful!
review 2: The word "labyrinth" is used at least twice in this translation and, in my opinion, that word best sums up the various timeframes and sub-plots that we are forced to endure in what could have been an interesting and exciting mystery. Indeed, the "lost girls" are not really the focus of this story which concentrates more on a Vatican group whose mission is to punish those who have remained unpunished for very grave crimes. I was very disappointed. less
