review 1: Kaz, a ghost boy, lives in an old school house with his mom, dad, brother, grandmom and grandpop, and dog Cosmo. They are all ghosts and life is pretty normal, well as normal as a ghost life could be, until one day there's a huge rumble and parts of the ceiling start to rain down. Apparently, the old school house is getting demolished and the wrecking ball is coming their way! The ghost family finds themselves on the "outside" and the wind carries them away. Kaz gets separated from the rest of the family and finds himself on the doorstep of a library. Kaz floats inside the window and meets a "solid" or real person named Claire and an old ghost named Beckett. There's a commotion one day when some of the kids see a ghost! It wasn't Kaz or Beckett, so who could it be? ... moreIs there a new ghost in the building or is someone playing a trick? You'll have to read and find out!I thought this was a great book for beginning readers who find themselves interested in ghostly subject matter but need it done in a gentle manner. The vocabulary is slightly challenging, with words like "detective", "wrecking", "bookshelves", etc., however, it isn't overwhelming. I questioned why Kaz had never eaten an apple or didn't know what money was-my only explanation is that when he became a ghost, he forgot everything he knew when he was alive...I know, I'm a virgo! Enough said, right?? Anyway, this book was clear and to the point. I'd hand this book to kids in 1st grade who are reading very well, otherwise 2nd-3rd grade or lower level readers in 4th grade.Read-a-likes:Calendar Mysteries series by Ron Roy, because it's a easy chapter book series involving gentle mysteries.Eerie Elementary series by Jack Chabert, because they both are early chapter books that are aimed at newly independent readers, and have easy-to-read text, high-interest content, and fast-paced plots. They both also display that "otherworldly" subject matter that most kids love!
review 2: A fun read for 2nd and 3rd graders that like ghost stories (that aren't scary!) and mysteries. Kaz is a ghost who gets separated from his family when he gets blown "outside" then blown away from his family. He end up at a library that is reported to be haunted. A girl, Claire, can see him (and other ghosts, too); she is eager to be a detective like her parents, so she takes notes on all the ghosts she sees. Claire and Kaz ultimately team up to find the ghost that is haunting the library. less
