review 1: I love a good adolescent novel. "We were Liars" fits the bill: melodrama, young love, discord between adults and children. Add to this one a Kennedy-like mystique, old money, and a patriarchal grandfather whose children are greedy and dysfunctional. Summers on the island home have always been part of Cady's life. Now a teen-ager, she suffers from migraines and prescription drug overload. Coming of age means learning brutal truths for Cady. It may be a classic adolescent novel formula, but "Liars" grabbed me and held me. Cousins are, as Facebook often repeats, our first friends, and this family is no exception.
review 2: When we used this in Literature Circles in my class, the group students who were lucky enough to get it first were thrilled! Emily Lock
... morehart always delivers - and this novel is no different. The group kept upping their reading goals each night because they couldn't wait to get to the next section. (I read it in a day for the same reason!) At the end of each class we have a brief reading time after our discussions - the WE WERE LIARS group started crying - one girl screamed - and then they all ran into the hall to discuss it, so they wouldn't ruin it for their friends who were on the waiting list. You MUST read this - it is a class favorite. less
