The Iremonger Trilogy
review 1: Entirely unique and completely intriguing. In a strangely post-apocalyptic yet Victorian England that seems to have been consumed by heaps of possibly sentient objects, Clod Iremonger and Lucy Pennant uncover the horrible truth behind the Iremonger family's rule. Deliciously creepy and full of fun word play (for example, every member of the Iremonger family has a name that is not quite but almost a traditional name - Clod/Claude, Tummis/Thomas), it's full of atmosphere, rich world-building, and delightfully horrible villainy. While it does get a bit long in places and not all of the details of how this world operates are completely clear, tween readers who enjoy a Gothic sense of horror will eat this up.
review 2: Well at first, this book is strange, wonderful
... moreand captivating. The constant use of repetition and short sharp sentences makes this fresh and easy to read, although the vocabulary is intelligent and it often leaves you hanging at the end of chapters! The content is rather peculiar at first but as you get deeper into the heaps, you get engulfed by the whole World of the Iremongers. The ending is gripping and makes you want more! Unfortunately, I didn't have the second installment, Foulsham, at hand when I finished Heap House and it is excruciating not to! I NEED TO READ MORE OF THIS STORY IMMEDIATELY! less

Surprisingly dull despite the central concept. (Edward Carey Lite for the YA crowd, perhaps?)

Eldritch, quirky, slow. Lemony Snicket + Edward Gorey minus the bleak humour of both.
