review 1: A different take on the life of Eleanor of Aquitaine from the books by Sharon Kay Penman. Using the French spelling deliberately, Elizabeth Chadwick has used her own rigorous research methods with primary and secondary sources, and her less conventional research method, which helps her in picturing the scenes and relationships. As I read I could understand why some of my friends who love the books of Sharon Kay Penman stopped reading. I however happily kept reading, yelling at. Henry often, and mulling over the differences in interpretation that comes from two different authors. I highly recommend Elizabeth Chadwick's books for her very easy to read sentences, that are so beautifully crafted. I had to read her description of Thomas Becket out to many of the English teacher... mores at my workplace, to demonstrate the way that two sentences that were short, could by the selection of words paint such a full picture.
review 2: This second book in the Eleanor of Aquitaine book certainly delivers. It picks up with Henry and Eleanor going to be crowned in England and follows their lives together and the lives of those around them and touches on Becket’s story. ‘The Winter Crown’ is a very enjoyable read and well written and the characters are also well written and intriguing people to read about. The latter half of the book focuses on Eleanor’s determination to keep Aquitaine for her son Richard and to outwit Henry. This is a less sympathetic portrayal of Henry II then there usually is and it made a pleasant surprise and an interesting take on events of that time. What sets this apart from other historical fiction for me is that events are well detailed and explained and even if you did not know much about this period of history that would not matter with this as Chadwick writes it extremely well. I cannot wait for the next book in the series of Eleanor of Aquitaine. less
