review 1: Author George is an amazing writer, but her books are even. Some are so formulaic as to being superficial, others become rich with description. This is one of the latter. Protagonist Lynley actually has a personality in this one. There is a new boss at Scotland Yard, Isabelle, as acting. She has her psychoanalytic background, alcoholic and not allowed to see her twin sons. She brings Lynley back. Remember his wife was murdered, very pregnant, on their door step. A young woman is murdered, a pastry chef named Jemima. She lives in the south in New Forest, where ponies can run free. This is actually a very interesting part of the book. There are some intersecting plots, and author George is a master at weaving these together. She even brings in St. James, Lynley... mores friend, since his sister is involved with a perpetuator, and St. James’ wife, Deborah, Lynley’s former lover, photographs Jemima. I don’t know, I enjoyed it. But I think one of my favorite characters deserves better treatment. Barbara Havers, is drawn a little too superficially. Seriously, would an excellent detective wear horrible t shirts…..
review 2: Absolute page turner. My first venture into an Elizabeth George novel and I was fascinated. The characters of Lynley and Havers were (sort of) familiar from television shows, so I had at least an idea of what they were like. But this fleshed them out a bit.I'm a little reluctant to recommend this book to just anyone. If you're the sort who can't read about even fictional violence involving children, please move on and don't even start the book. (It's right up front.) And even some of the adult violence might be a bit too graphic. Agatha Christie this ain't.But I found the characters interesting, allowing this reader to constantly shift her focus as the evidence drifted out. There's a new, temporary boss in the police and she has issues, quite a few as it turns out, but we know that almost as soon as she's introduced. Maybe it's that airline vodka bottle in her purse. Isabelle Ardery has trouble handling the staff properly and a few clues get missed along the way.The thatcher, the ex-girlfriend murder victim plus her brother and one-time bosom buddy, the new thatcher girlfriend, the dogs, lodgers, landlady, psychic -- okay, there are a lot of names and people to keep track of. We have a parallel story with a child murder to keep in mind too. It's a long (almost 900 pages in paperback) and complicated book but I found it hard to put down and it never sagged for me. Enjoyable read, good mystery. less

Another rich, character-driven mystery by my favorite, E. George. A very satisfying read.
