review 1: Widow Temperance Dews is trying to find a patron for her family's foundling home which has fallen on hard times. She is approached by Lazarus Huntington, Lord Caire, with a proposition. Caire is hunting for a murderer and needs her help navigating the slum she knows like the back of her hand. In exchange for her help, he will introduce her to members of society so she can find a patron for the orphanage. Together Temperance and Caire find themselves in danger when the murderer strikes again.I have not had much luck picking historical romances lately, but this one was a winner. There is so much going on in this book. Temperance has a secret from her past that she knows will ruin her. Caire has a hard time showing any type of emotion, and doesn't like anyone touching him. Th... moreere are some fantastic secondary characters in this book, including Temperance's brother, Winter, her youngest sister, Silence, Caire's best friend, Godric, and the mysterious Ghost of St. Giles. The story kept interested. I didn't want to put this book down and will be continuing the series. My rating: 4.5 Stars.
review 2: 3.5 stars. Really, really good book. My only issues with it was the main character, Temperance, and the annoying propensity the author had of including too many POV's from Silence and a few other characters. I understand the need to introduce other characters in the series, especially with how this series is set up. But I don't agree with including them so much that it takes away from the characters in the current story/novel. It's an annoying pet peeve of mine. Besides that, the story was engaging and unpredictable ( in a good way) and the writing was drool worthy. Some period based novels don't have writing as good as this one, nor do they incorporate period events and issues like this one did so flawlessly. I highly recommend this book. It was a great start to what I'm sure will be an amazing series. less

Really enjoyed this - terrifically angsty hero, an unusual heroine. Very hot tension between them.
