review 1: I found this one a little disappointing, but then, I wasn't too wild about Wicked Intentions either. Hoyt is a good writer and she knows how to tell a story. Still, I found this one to be a bit too routinely written and somewhat uninspired. I really liked Lady Hero when she appeared in Wicked Intentions but found her strangely disappointing here. Griffin didn't knock me outta my boots either. It is a good read though if you don't expect too much. My favorite Hoyt novels are The Raven Prince, and To Beguile a Beast. This one wasn't a waste of money (far from it, it's entertaining after all) but... no second Raven Prince ;o)
review 2: Sister of the Duke of Wakefield, Lady Hero Batten has accepted the proposal of the Marquess of Mandeville. Hero is happy with her
... morechoice of future husband, until she meets his younger brother, Griffin Remmington, a notorious rake who is said to have seduced his brother's first wife. When Hero travels to the slum of St. Giles to visit an orphanage, Griffin insists on going along to keep her safe. Soon the two strike up a friendship which soon turns into an attraction they can't deny.I didn't think I would enjoy a book where the main couple were betraying Griffin's brother, Thomas (Hero's fiance), but Elizabeth Hoyt pulls off the storyline with no problems. Maybe it was because Thomas was only marrying Hero to get a wife equal to his station, even though he was in love with another woman at the time. I liked both Griffin and Hero, who showed that opposites attract and are sometimes perfect for each other. I also loved seeing how Griffin tried to make himself a better man for Hero. My rating: 4.5 Stars. less

I didn't like Lady Hero, I found her very wishy washy. She initially defied her brother and social mores to become a patroness of an orphanage in the slums, even venturing out there alone, which showed some strength of character. But then turned so weak about defying conventions by repeatedly refusing Griffin's proposals of marriage but wasn't shy about sleeping with him whilst engaged to his older brother. The inconceivable part was that she still agreed to marry the brother after he slapped her and called her a whore!

I actually enjoyed this book better than the first in the series. While I liked Lady Hero when she was introduced in the first book, her character, and that of Griffin, instantly shocked me in the first chapter. The plot, the turmoil, were all well written, in my opinion and the side stories around Silence, Phoebe, the Ghost of St. Giles, and even the introduction story at the beginning of each chapter held my interest. All in all, I enjoyed it very much :)
