review 1: This series is amazing, which everyone perusing the reviews must know by now. I am glad I waited (unintentionally!) to start the series until there were so many to enjoy. I'm having the wonderful Christmas of reading a new Maiden Lane book every night after the kids are put to bed. It's perfect! While I have enjoyed all the series, the story of Mickey the Pirate and Silence the Good Widow is my favorite so far (of only the first 3). Every single time Hoyt starts something that I think I can predict where she's going, she twists the familiar trope and goes somewhere totally different, which left me constantly nervous that it WASN'T going to turn out as I wanted. Seriously, I was actually worried about the happy ending right up to the very end. For example: how many times wh... moreen there's a sick character and the historical physician pulls out his nasty bloodletting stuff have we seen the H or h stop the doctor? It's like a cliché, the bloodletting is mentioned and all of a sudden a main character basically stops the doctor b/c all the modern readers know bloodletting is so bad, and the historical character says something like "stop, no, I will do better, you quack!" ... but that's NOT where Hoyt takes that scene. I kept expecting the cliché, and she never, ever delivered the clichéd result to each event she set up. And I am loving the Georgian setting - the clothes, wigs, and morals are so much more interesting to me right now than the Regency period. I do recommend reading in order.
review 2: Charming-Mike was not-so-charming... he was cute when he was grumpy but I didn't understand his character. I can't explain it, he just rubbed me the wrong way.Silence was a good heroine, I just didn't really buy into her forgiving him for what he did to her before by chalking it up to "that was the old him"... seriously? uh, no. I'm not into stories filled with sex scenes just to fill in something. I didn't see the need to have it chapter after chapter, i get it! Mike is a pirate who likes females, Silence is prim-and-proper woman, I really don't need sex to solve their compatibility problems. less
