review 1: If I did not have to read this novel for bookclub, I would have given up on the book after about 50 pages. The story sounded promising, but the book turned out to have a thin plot, unsympathetic protagonists, and serviceable prose. I think the author tried to make the book deeper in the second part - the writing was also stylistically better - but it was too little, too late.My bookclub described the book best: emotionally empty.Dates: 25-27 May 2014
review 2: I found this book interesting in an historical sense as I learnt a little about an artist in 1920's Paris that I did not previously know. Those true tidbits were wrapped in a fascinating story about love and passion in all its artistic forms. I enjoyed the descriptions of life for the demimonde which was
... moreoften not golden or glamorous. Some may find the lesbian sex a little titillating but it serves its purpose in the story line. I also enjoyed the descriptions of the artist's process as she painted. I recommend the book as a quick but poignant read. less
