Someone Else's Fairytale
review 1: This really should be book 3 in the "Someone Else's Fairy Tale" series--same people, etc. I was a bit put off by some of the beginning of the book. Kyra's "voice" was so down on herself and so sexually aware that it was too much, really, and at chapter 4, I decided I would give her another chapter or two before I bagged reading the book. By the time I looked again, I was on chapter 10. I thought this was a young adult book, given the boy band/fangirl thing going on, but it certainly did not read like one. I kept reading because I thought I remembered reading other books by this author that I had liked and that were not too racy. I was kind of let down during the last few chapters. I felt the author let me down in not somehow playing the redemption card a bit more--... morethat a person can change and make new choices. That was what was happening but not what really came out at the end. The survival of the media storm took front and center. Anyway, it was an okay read.
review 2: I received a paperback copy of Break It Up for review from the author.I have already read two books by EM Tippetts - Someone Else's Fairytale and Nobody's Damsel where we already meet Kyra Armijo, niece of superstar, actor Jason Vanderhilt. It was good to see Kyra featured as the main character in this book with previous leading characters moved to the background but very much still there. I found this book easy to read and covered it in two evenings. It is geared towards the YA reader in the writing, content and language. What I liked was that Kyra has grown up. She was a troubled teenager in the previous two books, but she really comes into her own and has her head screwed on right from the start. Good, strong, believable characters. I could imagine a family managed boy band being molly coddled and how naive they would probably be once they have moved away under different management. All bands have disagreements, don't they? How about Take That, for example, in their early years? Likeable characters? Yes, Kyra and her extended family, Zach and his brother. Is Ben that bad really? He just wants some independence. Are the new team that bad? They are just doing their job. This story is about growing up, learning to stand on your own two feet in the limelight and deal with all that goes hand in hand with fame. A lot for the YA reader to identify with emotions, guilt, loyalty, friendship, romance, trust, to name a few. There are moral messages here. This is one to pass onto the the YA reader in my house. less
