review 1: An interesting, enjoyable mystery by an author, Emily Arsenault, who is new to me. The main character is a struggling, aspiring academic, and central to the book is her relationship with her brother. I found this plot thread more compelling than the mystery, which wasn't particularly difficult to unravel. Still, although the "whodunit" part of this mystery was relatively obvious, I found the characters well drawn and compelling. I look forward to reading Emily Arsenault's next book. I suspect she has a very bright future, perhaps with a Gone Girl-style breakout book to come.

Hard to believe Theresa isn't more successful in her life in general, considering the lengths she goes to to help him, as evidenced by romancing a bartender to steal valuable evidence, adopting the name of her thesis subject as an alias in various encounters, and having the victim's pet puggle as a sidekick as she chases down proof of Jeff's innocence. A rousing mystery meets a hilariously dysfunctional family--my favorite match. less

As a "beach read" mystery this would get a 5. Tight mystery. Surprise ending.
