review 1: In order to enter an Audible Easter egg competition, I downloaded free first chapters of selected audiobooks - The Sleeper was one. I gave it a listen-to whilst ironing, and surprisingly, wanted more. I suspect my enjoyment of the story might have been heightened by listening rather than reading, as I doubt I wouldn't have even picked it up in a shop. It's style is very different. It is not a book filled with complicated sentences, or extravagant adjectives. It is, however, compelling. The characters gently wind you in, and in this case, less is more. Like following a paper trail, you amble along picking up torn snippets of personalities. It isn't a big rambling plot, or so fast in twists that you lose sight of the original concept - but a strange, almost hypnotically slow... more plod along a quiet lonely road. It has surprises, not big fat "well I'll be damned" ones, but "oh!" ones. I'm still not sure it would have the same impact if read, but definitely worth listening to.
review 2: Emily Barr's books are always excellent and this combination of women's fiction and mystery/thriller was particularly riveting. Very readable and hard to put down. I did think part of the plot was a little far fetched, particularly later on in the novel, but that didn't detract from the excellent story and strong writing. If you haven't read any of Barr's books, do so soon. Her quirky story lines are not to be missed. less
