review 1: Good book about the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. A pastor, theologian, and spy with in involvement in the Valkyrie plot against Hitler.I found the additional insight regarding Christianity in Germany to be very insightful and help put it in perspective. It details the Third Reich's hijacking of German Christianity with the use of Luther, nationalism, and the wounds from WWI.The Nazis constantly referred to Luther's previously little known anti-semantic ravings to fuel their cause. However these statements came towards the end of Luther's life where everything began to unravel along with his health. One can only imagine what Luther's younger self in his right mind would have thought of such statements."But the other piece of this puzzle has to do with the confusion that ... morearises when the Christian faith scones too closely related to a culture or national identity. For many Germans, their national identity had become so melted together with whatever Lutheran Christian faith they had that it was so impossible to see either clearly".Bonhoeffer saw early the absurdity of this Nazi claim and knew the the church had been I statutes by God to exist for all peoples in the whole world. Bonhoeffer believed it was the role of the church to speak fort house who could not speak.
review 2: I feel as though I have walked beside a man who had discovered something worth dying for & who worked and fought for it to the point of imprisonment and execution. In Bonhoeffer I have witnessed what it looks like to live a life entirely surrendered to God. Bonhoeffer's faith in Christ was proven by his actions and his character as he opposed one of the greatest attacks of evil the world has ever seen in Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich. Mataxas has done a fabulous job of not only putting this reader into the mind and skin of Bonhoeffer, but also he provided an education on the rise and fall of the Third Reich. In some way I feel as though I have lived through the dark days of WW II. However, due to the passionate devotion of Bonhoeffer to the Christian faith and his delightful personality, all the horrors were endurable. Bonhoeffer cast light into dark places, and the world is a better place thanks to that. less
