Book review: I Don’t Draw, I Color!, by Adam Lehrhaupt, illustrated by Felicita Sala

Lehrhaupt, Adam. I Don’t Draw, I Color! Illustrated by Felicita Sala. Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books, 2017. $17.99. ISBN 9781481462754. Unpaged. Ages 4-8. P7 Q7

The cover has a swoosh of colors coming out of the crayon into a big wave. The book opens with, “Some people are good at drawing, but my puppies look like mush”. The first page is mainly in black and grey hues, with only a few colors. There is a lot of white space on most of the pages which helps draw attention to the colors and text on the page. The boy expresses himself by coloring instead of drawing. The book ends with the question, “What colors are you?”, which lends to a discussion on what colors children think represent them. The illustrator used color, lines, and shapes to express emotions. Children can relate to all the colors and having more than one feeling at once.

Verdict: This book inspires children who do not feel that they are talented at writing to find other ways to express themselves. Children will be able to relate to having more than one feeling at once. I will be using this book in my character education class to stimulate a discussion on feelings and how to express them through coloring.
