review 1: I know everyone loves this book, but I just...didn't get it I guess? The Jane Eyre parallels were as subtle as a rock through a window and yet the friendship that happens seems to come out of absolutely nowhere. I want to like this book and I want to like the characters, but ultimately, I just don't care. There's not enough plot, the main character is the only one with any depth or development, and the fox makes no sense to me. I honestly don't know why this book is so popular, but I don't necessarily have anything against it either. It's just that the only thing I think it had for it was the art, which is lovely.

The soft illustrations perfectly capture the inner psyche and the outer bombardments which batter our struggling heroine. I'll be keeping this one close at hand in the middle school library.... less
