review 1: this book could have been called instead jane eyre & me. also there was not enough of the fox in the book to qualify being in the title. the story involves a french candian girl named helene who suffers from a poor body image due to being teased at school for her weight and learns it from her as well loving mom who seems to have her own problems with her body. throughout the book the girl is reading jane eyre and identifies with her. we get comparisons of jane's story in color and helene's story in b& w. she has 2 brothers who featured as briefly as the fox. no idea what happened to the father for nowhere is he mentioned. she goes on a class trip for 4 days where she is put in a tent with the other outcasts. one day she meets a fox who runs away cause gets scared off by a... morenother girl then nothing more occurs between them. little later she makes a friend named geraldine who previously was in the group consisting of her tormentors. geraldine decides i guess no longer to tease helene and gets cast out as an outcast. they procede to become friends. sorry best friends according to the main character which makes no sense to me. althrough i feel due to helene is starved for affection so anyone who shows her a little kindness will do. hence forth her image of herself is changed and life becomes wonderful again. moral is you need people to always like you or your self esteem will suffer greatly. all in all a very short read more like a picture book then a graphic novel. gave it 2 stars due to how the illustrations were quite nice but the story itself was a bit bland and demeaning.
review 2: As girls grow up, sometimes their friends fall away and even turn to bullying. What does the outcast do? In this case, she turns to Jane Eyre for comfort, and even to a wild fox. This would be a good basis for parent/daughter talks on friends, body changes, body image, and what she can do about others who might be at the receiving end of female bullying. Black and white pencil drawings with occasional splashes of color emphasize the depressed mood of the central character. less

Absolutely beautiful drawings and hand-lettering (or it looks that way).
