review 1: I fondly remember going to a matinee at the Garden Theater as a child to see Dick Van Dyke in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I haven't read the Ian Fleming original, but am a fan of Boyce's Milions and Cosmic, so I was looking forward to this new sequel. It was a fantastical journey! Lots of fun, centered around the Tooting family and their camper van, some of it very silly. I heard an interview with Boyce on NPR and one interesting fact he pointed out was that this story is rare in children's lit because the whole family goes on the adventure. The parents are alive! They love each other! This would be a great summer read for fun-loving 4th and 5th graders.
review 2: Frank Cottrell Boyce is one of my favorite children's authors so when I saw he had written a new ch... moreapter in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's life I couldn't wait to read it. The original is one of the first movies I ever loved with one of my favorite actors, Dick Van Dyke. How can this not be one of my favorite books! I love that he continued the story and he put it a modern setting. I love that he kept the family togetherness and love as a big theme but also gave the children a chance to be independent and major plot elements. I love that it was exciting and the characters got into impossible life threatening situations but that the characters always stayed relaxed and positive (except Lucy). Delightful!! less
