review 1: Great atmosphere, although sometimes Tallis gets a little tripped up by the fixation on pastries (understandable by still). A good read for the classical music lover, as the plot hinges so much on the opera world of Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century. There are some slight twists to the plot that were a little unanticipated, and it's hard to say more or give up the plot. An interesting historical mystery, probably worth trying out the rest of the series.
review 2: Tallis is totally hit or miss, and this one is a hit. Lots of great characters, glimpses into the musical and food scenes of Vienna, you can tell he did a lot of research, and the writing is less grinding than usual. Two things I wish he would have avoided: a) the sexual dumplings, and
