review 1: Trigger warnings: rape, incest, child-pornography, violent sexI didn't quite expect the blunt, unabashed language. Obviously the subject matter is telling but I guess I expected something a little more academic. While Dines makes valid arguments regarding the debasement of women and harmful effects of gonzo porn, I feel that she fails to mention, to any substantial length, not all porn is inherently evil. It is not until the very last paragraph of the book that she states any sort of sex-positive rhetoric. The porn industry OBVIOUSLY had faults, there's no doubt there but the use of all porn and "deviant" sex should not fall under fire. Comprehensive education on consent for children and teens is an important step in making a change toward reducing the consumption of violen... moret and degrading porn.
review 2: Pornography - its images, values and how it frames women as sexual objects for male gratification has seeped into mainstream society in a pervasive and insidious way. So argues Gail Dines in an emphatic style as she dismantles the myth that pornography is a benign social force, much less something associated with sexual liberation. It's hard to disagree with several of her core arguments, namely that:- Users of porn become desensitized to images they once found repellent and the drive to seek out 'edgier' material pushes more extreme types of porn into the mainstream. This is complemented by the pornographers desire to 'push the envelope' in the search for new markets.- The consumption of porn by adolescents has an effect on what it is considered normal sexual behaviour and shapes expectations of sex and sexual behaviour in ways which are socially damaging. Increasing use of porn also leads to unrealistic expectation of body image and the desire to pursue practices such as genital waxing.- The influence of porn culture on pop culture has served to push images and behaviour once considered pornographic into the mainstream.- Porn is rife with crude racial stereotypes as exemplified by the language and nature of 'interracial' porn scenes and websites- The fundamental message of porn is that women exist to be subservient to whatever gratifies men, the word 'no' does not exist in the vocabulary of female performers, and the humiliation and verbal and physical abuse of women is part and parcel of porn.In some instances, however, I felt that Dines overstates the case by blurring the lines between a critique of pornography and its damaging effects and other wider arguments related to sexuality and expectations of femininity and masculinity. For instance, she argues that 'hookup sex' on College campuses represent a manifestation of porn culture as the expectation of no-strings attached sex is consistent with the ideology of porn which eschews love, affection and tenderness in favour of sexual gratification with no emotional ties. However, the phenomenon of young men seeking casual sex is less about porn per se and more a reflection of other dominant cultural values which would exist irrespective of pornography. The book is also very light on arguments about how to push back the damaging effect of pornography merely stating that a 'movement' is needed but with little in the way of practical reflection on how real change might be achieved.Nonetheless as a salutary warning about how the pervasive nature of pornography is having corrosive impacts on our society this book makes a powerful case that should shake people out of complacency and lay to rest the myth that porn is socially benign or liberating. less

Important, though extremely graphic book, on the porn industry and its effects.

It depicts the harm on teens and students, but barely a solution.
