review 1: I am excited to be a part of a book group this next year. This is the first book I have read with it, and I really like that it makes me step out of my box. This is not at all my usual fodder, and I am ok with that.2.75Overall, I wouldn't say the book was a super well written one. However, I really do appreciate the research that went into this. I know very little about the Russian Bolshevik revolution and it was enlightening in that way. I imagine the records they have of the family on which the book was based are really sparse, which gave the author quite a bit of leeway in writing the story. But I was a little disappointed that the ending was pretty far off from the real one.
review 2: This book didn't end up being much like I expected it to be. I t
... morehought it would be mostly about the first LDS family in Russia, and was excited to hear about how living in Russia was as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.Instead it seems like very little (and I mean VERY little) is known about the family. And truthfully I think it's a stretch to say it was even loosely based on their lives. That being said, I really enjoyed reading this book as a novel with a lot of historical information about Russia during the Bolshevik revolution. I liked how at the end of every chapter the author talked about what was happening by referring to the historical facts she based the events upon. I enjoyed the characters and would read this book again. less
