review 1: This book was so underwhelming. My mind wandered almost the entire time. I didn't get the connection between the novel part of the book about the arsonist and the memoir part of the book about the author. It made very little sense. I also had a hard time keeping the people straight...so many Norwegian names! Maybe some of this was simply lost in translation, but for all the praise this book got it just didn't do it for me.
review 2: Rather meta Norwegian novel. The narrator, a writer, bears the same name as the author and the story is of a series of arsons that took place in his hometown the year he was born. It didn't gel for me. The portions focusing on the narrator seemed solipsistic, and the pace of the story as a whole was like molasses. Although, read... moreing the reviews, perhaps I'm just shallow. At any rate, it wasn't really my cup of tea. less
