review 1: In this taut psychological suspense story based on true events from bestselling Norwegian author, Gaute Heivoll, a serial arsonist wreaks havoc in a rural town. Heivoll provides an extremely vivid sense of place in this depiction of an isolated village, surrounded by dense forests. This is a rendering of a true crime story of a 1970s arson case. Told in first-person, this is a story the author heard repeatedly as he grew up there. In his spare writing style, he writes from the viewpoint of all affected by the fires, including the arsonist's. The novel explores the question of "why" rather than "who" and thus becomes an almost introspective exploration of the question of insanity.

Okay, so I was traveling to Norway and, perhaps, had a special interest in learning about Nordic sensibilities...But I found the story compelling, not quite a mystery because the reader learns early on who is causing the fires. So the story becomes one of motivation, how does a good child go bad? less
