review 1: What a great read. I didn't know it was a sequel until I read the reviews, so I enjoyed this as a stand-alone. I enjoyed meeting the children and finding out about life on the Rock in 1935. The author has obviously done some good research to get the period details correct and to get a feel for the island, even volunteering there for a year. I would recommend this book to anyone in Y6-10 who doesn't feel the need to battle through a difficult story, doesn't need extreme adventure but would like the everyday pace to roll along. If you want to move onto an adult read about island prison life I would recommend Papillon - an account by Henri Charriere of his time as a convict. It is a another whole world and not suitable for younger readers.
review 2: This sweet, an
... mored comical novel, is a great read, particularly if you’re looking for a filler book. I quickly enjoyed this book while I was trying to find a more sophisticated novel. This is one of those books that you don’t have to deeply invest yourself in, and is just enjoyable. This novel is definitely for a younger audience, despite its name, but again, if you just have the urge to read but do not have a book that you want to seriously read at the moment pick this one. I sure got a laugh out of it. less
