review 1: First book in the Spero Lucas series. George Pelecanos returns to what he does best: telling stories about the underbelly of Washington DC. Don't pick this up expecting a high-stakes political thriller, George Pelecanos tells stories of the other side of DC. With the passing of Elmore Leonard, his most obvious influence, we can only hope Pelecanos has a long and fruitful writing career ahead of him.
review 2: I'm not going to lie, it was hard for me to root for Spero Lucas when it seemed like he was going to get Ernest killed, all because he had to go after Rooster. Who doesn't expect the precocious film-loving youth to get offed in books like these? Come to think of it, I was worried about all his combat buddies when they were working with him, so I suppose
... more kudos go to Pelecanos for writing characters for whom I can clutch my pearls. Kudos also for a fabulous little twist ending that put the extra star on my review. I see a lot more Pelecanos in my future. less

There really are a lot of good modern crime novelists these days. I feel way behind on my reading.

This is the first Pelecanos book I've read. Doesn't make me want to read another.
