review 1: okay I don't know about you but for me a mystery involves some level of "mystery"! A lot of these stories are just a horrible event remembered or unfolding and many of them seem to involve very old people and nursing homes and nurses, very odd. I've read collections of the best science writing and short stories and they were really great but this was just wallowing in the dregs, very disappointing.
review 2: I have read several of these over the years, and they always have a lot of great stories. In this volume, quite a few are not really mysteries in that there is no question who has committed the crime--some are not even crime stories, e.g. Joyce Carol Oates' story (Damn her! ... moree real mysteries, but the quality of the writing here is high enough that it doesn't really matter. Only a few misfires. Just started reading my first Pelecanos book--it's also the first book I'm reading on my Kindle, so I feel like I'm cheating somehow. less

The 2008 version of The Best American Vaguely About Crime Stories is the usual mix of good and bad.

Nope. It's so tough to find a good story. I'm starting to doubt compilation books.
