review 1: This was a very good story about a relationship between a father and his son. The father has high expectations for his boy but the son has a hard time staying on the right track. His behavior gets him sent to juvenile detention center where he learns to get along with others and actually forms some lasting relationships. I enjoyed the author's writing style and plan on reading some of his other works.
review 2: The story of a working class white kid in DC who gets in trouble and ends up in juvenile detention. He gets out and is working for his father's carpet installation business when he is presented with a situation where a great deal of cash is found. He has three choices, take the money, turn the money in to the police, or leave it and pretend nothing happe
... morened he chooses to leave it. Some reviewers have said this doesn't ring true, but denial and inertia are powerful forces, so it seemed quite plausible to me. The book explores what happens and how the white kid's experience differs from that of the black kids he was incarcerated with. As usual with Pelecanos, the depiction of DC and it's suburbs was spot on. The main characters were born in the 80s, a generation younger than most of Pelecanos' characters in previous books. I thought he made this transition well. The book was interesting and also thought provoking without being overly preachy. less

Pretty good. Characters drawn very well, but ultimately it just felt a little bit empty to me
