review 1: This was an interesting read, but hot great. My first from this author, and I suspect he's done better. Very idiosyncratic with all the references to specific shoes, even to the brand, cars, cigarettes and music. Honestly, if I was much younger I don't think I would have understood any of them... as it is, I still was unfamiliar with a lot. This stuff is going to speak most clearly to those who grew up in that time and region, compared to me on the west coast. Pelecanos, by the way, seems to young to know this stuff first-hand, so lots of research I guess. Nevertheless, the characterizations and converging story lines were entertaining and thought-provoking, with some nostalgia thrown in. Definitely worth the time, and I'll be looking for more from this au... morethor.
review 2: It has everything that I came to love about Pelecanos. Like always it´s a stylish crime drama with a touch of tragedy, filled with intriguing characters whose dialogue is filled with a creative use of slang. It´s filed with countless references to his earlier work and makes this into one big nostalgic trip for fans of his work. That being said, it doesn´t do anything that he didn´t do before, and it really misses the gravity of his better novels. It´s like he has written his own fan fiction rather than go for something entirely unique. less

Nice, quick read from Pelecanos, set in early 1970s DC. Big hair, big cars, big guns, big fun.
