review 1: I don't think it was just my yearning to be once again in the Dutch countryside that fostered my enjoyment of this book (although this book did help to ease that ache). There is a matter of factness to the writing that is intensely charming. Helmer does not speak often, but as we witness his life on the farm we develop an understanding of him even as it seems that he is just beginning to understand himself.

The premise is simple, a twin left to deal with the loss of his brother on a small Dutch farm, but the issues touched - desire, frustration, anger and what to do with it, renewal, resentment... more, loss, love above all in the light of these - and the context in which the events take place, a life of routine and domesticity lit up by flashes of barely understood yearning, make this novel almost unbearably resonant. less
