review 1: The landscapes were beautifully described. and the animals, especially the donkeys and sheep. I liked the narrator and didn't even mind the nicely tied up ending, I thought it was time he had a nice something. I read this book super fast, I had a hard time putting it down, from the very beginning when Father is moved it caught me up in its spell and held me in the loneliness and frustration of all those years spent differently than you thought when you were young, but still the feelings of satisfaction and contendedness, somehow, sometimes.
review 2: This work of fiction is a stark and (seemingly) calm telling of a life by it's owner. His plain and sometimes monotonous descriptions of the tasks of his daily life tell so much: that he is lonely and a farmer, but... more also his pain, the loss of his twin, and how he sees his lot in life. I thought I would find this tedious and boring, but grew to crave its simplicity. The author manages to give expression to a mostly stoic Netherlander with plot progression and the responses of people and animals he interacts with. This style has a kind of poetry to it that I loved--the simple style matches well with the actual landscape and farm life of the region. The characters introduce themselves into the farmer's (Helmer's) life and he observes this, rarely participating in any action voluntarily. He can be a frustrating character to deal with, but as his inaction melts into moderate action, the reader cheers quietly for him in the end. (Thanks for the loan, Becky!) less
