review 1: This is a strange book. I don't really know what I think about it and I'm still not sure what happened at the end. It was a bizarre combination of intriguing, unsettling and tedious. I found it irritating and pretentious but, oddly, I felt compelled to finish it, possibly due to the elegant writing. Or possibly because I thought everything would become clearer if I read on. It didn't. I thought Gerbrand Bakker's 'The twin' was outstanding; 'The detour' left me cold.
