review 1: This is a strange book. I don't really know what I think about it and I'm still not sure what happened at the end. It was a bizarre combination of intriguing, unsettling and tedious. I found it irritating and pretentious but, oddly, I felt compelled to finish it, possibly due to the elegant writing. Or possibly because I thought everything would become clearer if I read on. It didn't. I thought Gerbrand Bakker's 'The twin' was outstanding; 'The detour' left me cold.
review 2: (This book as sold as "The Detour" in Europe)Not sure where I got the recommendation for this but it's thoroughly worthwhile; hard to say much without revealing spoilers, of which there are many. Some very good surprises.It's in translation but reads exceptionally well despite; must be ve... morery weird in Dutch to have the fragments of Welsh!With entertainment, it's actually rather heart-rending and a page-turner at the same time. And when you've finished, you are still wondering what it's all about.Short ... tkaes no time ... recommended. less
