review 2: An atmospheric and complex story with little clear conclusion, this shouldn't really work as well as it does. However despite limited details and a highly ambig
... moreuous ending this keeps you reading and feels strangely satisfying to have completed. A Dutch woman, with an unspecified but painful (and presumably terminal) illness leaves her life in Holland and rents a Welsh farm and tries unsucessfully to prevent a fox from killing the geese that live there.... Meanwhile her husband (the husband, throughout the novel) decides that he must travel to Wales to find her. It doesn't sound all that promising and yet from these bare bones a complex and quite dark story grows up. Not really much more I can say without potenially spoiling the beauty of the novel, but I simply suggest you take the time to read it. less

I loved this rough-hewn, spare book. Nature transgresses. Makes me want to re-read Heinrich Boll.
